Can you help

Help needed please.

Looking for the service records for Tom Turner who lived in West Street Wivenhoe.
Born abt 1890 his Father and Mother were Elijah and Caroline Turner. His trade is given as apprentice hairdresser.

Also his Brother George bn. abt.1886 of the same parents and address. who's trade is given as Yacht painter.

Tom is listed on the war memorial at Wivenhoe, he had another Brother called Thomas Turner.

Thanks all John, admin.

Hi. Tom Turner was a distant relative. His mother Caroline was born Caroline Bates and was the Sister of my great grandfather. Unfortunately I have no details of his military service though I am still searching Ancestry but it is a very common name. Do you know which service he was in, ie army /

I think i have solved the mystery of Tom Turner.  in the 1901 cencus there is no Thomas Turner listed only Robert, George and tom or as called by the enumerator (Tora). Robert was bn. abt. 1884 as was the so called Thomas.  Robert's occupation is given as a blacksmith in Forrestt's shipyard at Wivenhoe and Thomas's occupation at the same yard is given as a blacksmith.
I think Thomas and Tom are the same person.

Tom was sent to the shipyard aged 11 years old as a labourer  after his Father Elijah died.
He probably became a blacksmith with his brother Robert.
There seems to be something wrong on the census records with the names!!

Thomas's war record is on the CWGC, he was in the Army service Corp.
Service no 394370.
Next of kin is his Mother Caroline Turner.
Occupation given as a blacksmith at Forresst's shipyard ,Wivenhoe.

Hi Thomas Turner was my great uncle, George was my grandfather. I think Thomas and Robert are the same person who had the given names Thomas Robert. I think he was known to the family as Robert but on official records like the army and marriage certificates as Thomas. He appeared on census returns as a young boy called Robert and was mentioned at my Grandfathers funeral as Robert. I would like to find out how and when Tom died so if anyone knows please let me know.
Thanks Linda .

The case of Tom Turner seems to be a bit of a puzzle. Thomas George Turner birth registered March quarter 1884 in Lexden, which was the registration district for Wivenhoe. Reg entry 4a 439 Thomas Robert Turner birth registered June quarter 1884 in Lexden, which was the registration district for Wivenhoe. Reg entry 4a 493 The clue as to which of these was the son of Eijah and Caroline is in the June quarter entry which also has Maude Emma on the same entry as she was his twin as shown in the 1901 census. I believe that the Thomas registered in March was not part of the same immediate family. Tom Turner who is six years younger than his twin siblings was registered in Sept quarter 1889 Reg entry 4a 536 Whether the family called them both Tom or the older son Robert I cannot tell though from the previous posting of a direct family member it would appear that this was the case. Certainly in the 1901 census the older son is shown as Robert.

Sender unknown. but thanks for all your help.

I am a descendant of the Bates family and Susannah was my Gt Gt Aunt. Elijah Turner married my Gt Aunt Caroline and they are the parents of Tom Turner who is on the war memorial at Wivenhoe. I have been following the family through the census and trying to locate where they lived. I have been able to get a rough location for most of them using nearby landmarks (pubs etc) but I cannot locate Bovits or Bovets hole which is in the 1871 census and was somewhere near Angelsey Rd. If anyone can help me with the location I would be grateful. David Bates.
